Mohali did set off the fireworks. That is because the birthday boy, Yuvraj Singh, kept his promise to keep his eyes on the game and gave it the flourish to match!
Virender Sehwag’s sixty-four runs were crucial for India chasing Sri Lanka’s 206 in the second Twenty20 in cold Mohali, Chandigarh. But India still needed the final flourish to prevent the team from the Emerald Isle from walking away with the two match Twenty20 series.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka were once again the beneficiaries of a sloppy fielding display, a concern that is growing on the Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. More dropped catches meant Sri Lanka were given a license to thrill and to an extent, they did although they lost crucial wickets in the bid to rake up a huge total.
Once again the Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara, was at the forefront of things, pulling Sri Lanka 121 and forging a crucial second wicket partnership of eighty-one runs with Sanath Jayasuriya (who made thirty-one runs) after the early dismissal of Tillekeratne Dilshan.
Sangakkara’s fifty-eight was complimented by Chinthaka Jayasinghe’s thirty-eight. And a finish by Angelo Matthews who made twenty-six meant that Sri Lanka posted a second successive total in excess of 200.
Yuvraj Singh, who picked up three wickets on the road to halting the Sri Lankans from pulling away, was needed to produce another gem with the bat and he obliged. Five mighty sixes marked his twenty-five ball sixty.
But before Yuvraj, besides Sehwag, Dhoni also played his part with forty-six runs from twenty-eight balls, with Gautam Gambhir played a bit role in the first wicket partnership of fifty-eight.
India squared the series 1-1 and as they move onto the ODIs, the birthday boy may have been in a bit of trouble but only over a troubled finger.
