Expectations were high as Virender Sehwag looked incorrigible on 284 overnight. However, the start of the third day’s play at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai brought a huge disappointment for Sehwag who could have written himself into cricket history.
Sehwag perhaps forgot the theory often emphasized by Sunil Gavaskar - of beginning each day afresh as if beginning a new innings. Sehwag wanted to carry on from where he left off. But Muttiah Muralitharan was only too wily, taking a caught and bowled chance on the second bounce to send Sehwag back home on 293.
Sehwag could not add to his two triple centuries against Pakistan and South Africa. Had he done so, he would have overtaken the late Sir Don Bradman of Australia and Brian Charles Lara of the West Indies for the most number of triple centuries in Test cricket.
Even as the world boasted of Sehwag’s chance to make 400, Sehwag’s early dismissal put paid to the fans who finally showed up at the stadium in anticipation of more fireworks.
