Ind WI ODI 4: Match Abandoned for Roger Federer?
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jul 5 2009

The rain gods appeared to have another plan in mind. Cricket aficionados were disappointed but not sports lovers who had the opportunity to witness greatness at hand.
Just 7.3 overs had been bowled when the rains first hit. But that was not the first presence of the force of nature. Rain had delayed the match extensively for a second time in a row at the Beausejour Stadium in St. Lucia. While India won the rain curtailed affair two days ago, the trouble was yet to get started in the match today.

In the meantime, television viewers and sports lovers had the opportunity to switch over to tennis to watch one of the greats write himself into history. Roger Federer played an epic match last year in the Wimbledon final only to lose it to Rafael Nadal. However, the word epic needs to be reinvented after the game on hand today. Facing Andy Roddick, Federer did not have it easy for a set and a half but when he woke up, he made a real match of it. It was Roddick’s turn to fight from the brink and he did. And How!

The final set saw the match extend to 16-14 in Federer’s favour in the presence and company of the likes of Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras who specially flew in to watch Federer eclipse his record of fifteen grand slam titles.

Serena Williams’ victory over sister Venus was completely overshadowed by the historic moment that came after 4.15 minutes on court, the time in which one innings of the final one day match of the series would have been completed had rain not had a say.
With play abandoned for the day at St. Lucia, India won the series 2-1, albeit not as convincingly as Mahendra Singh Dhoni would have liked. For those who referred this page for the match review, there was only one match worth the mention and sadly, it was not the cricket match in the Caribbean.

P.S. Indian sports fans could look at the bright side. They could now follow Leander Paes and Cara Black’s fortunes in the mixed doubles finals.
