India sets a target of 402 runs in the first test against South Africa
Parikshit | Dec 17 2006

India bowls out South Africa in their first innings at 84, making a lead of 311 runs at the end of the second day’s play at Wanderers in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The day is to be remembered as 20 wickets fell in a day. Kerela’s S. Sreesanth made his day by bagging five wickets in the first innings. 84 is the South Africa’s lowest test score at Johannesburg against India since their re-entry into the international test cricket.

It was Virendra Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly who contributed for this lead - Sehwag scored 33, and Ganguly scored 51 in their first innings. At the end of the second day’s play, Laxman and Dhoni are surviving at the crease with 42 and 17 respectively.

The total score for India is 249 all out in the first innings and 146 for 5 in the second innings.

It is Ganguly this time that saved his team after being in controversy for not playing in form and justified himself. After facing a huge defeat of 4-0 in the ODI series, India should look forward to bag the test series against South Africa. Indian team being in controversy for past several days, should now justify themselves by putting South Africa under pressure and getting hold over them.

UPDATE

According to the latest reports, India was all out for 236 in its second innings, hence giving an overall lead of 401 runs. In it’s second innings, South Africa was 55 for 3 with Prince and Kallis on the crease.
