There was no element of surprise in the BCCI selection of the Indian team for the upcoming ODI series against Australia.
Rahul Dravid has learnt to live with the suspense that has become his cricket career in the latter half. Called upon to fill in the boots of Virender Sehwag and the absence of key players, Dravid was picked for South African conditions for the ICC Champions Trophy and did reasonably well in Sri Lanka during the Compaq Cup. But once again the selectors have decided team India could do without Dravid who will now be resigned to a possible recall sometime in the uncertain future.
Sachin Tendulkar will have no such problems. He is expected to be fit and raring after his food poisoning bout in South Africa during the ICC Champions Trophy 2009. Also expected to return with full fitness are Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag and one can only wonder while Sehwag states he has no interest in the captaincy, if Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s job is also on the line. Yuvraj Singh would be looking to kick on.
There is no sign of return of Zaheer Khan yet as also of taking stock of Ishant Sharma who once again finds his name in the squad announced for the first two ODIs. Munaf Patel makes a comeback and Sudeep Tyagi stakes a place with R.P. Singh being far from effective.
Virat Kohli’s retentionis not much of a surprise but Ravindra Jadeja’s name pops up once more even as Dhoni is beginning to realize that IPL performances cannot bridge the gap between international cricket. In effect, he replaces Yousuf Pathan who has not been able to convert his Twenty20 performances in the one day game. Abhishek Nayyar does not know what he has done wrong except that he has not had a full fledged chance yet.
