India to Blame for Pak Allegations, Umpiring & Younis May Quit!
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Oct 7 2009

These are some of the sensational stories emanating from Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pakistan team being accused by match fixing by one of their own.
The reactions ranged from the ludricrous to the furious in the immediate aftermath of Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports in Pakistan, accused Pakistan of deliberately tanking their semi final match against New Zealand and group match against Australia in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2009 in South Africa that Australia eventually won.
Pakistan captain, Younis Khan, is said to be so angry about the allegations, he is not in the mood to confront the National Assembly if summoned and has even threatened to take the captaincy off his shoulders. While he states that he was forced to play despite the fractured finger by the team management, Younis has been targetted by former Pakistan cricketers and captains such as Imran Khan who felt that Younis should not played in the first place and that his contributions were not in keeping with his role. Imran also called the Pakistan team “complacent” and “over confident”.
Dasti meanwhile has come out with a retraction stating that he had never outright accused Pakistan but that there were voices which were calling for an inquiry.
In fact, others such as the Pakistan coach, Intikhab Alam, and Imran Khan have accused India of having a hand in trying of often destroy Pakistan’s image. Alam believes that it was the Indian media that set the match fixing talk going, leading to a furore about Pakistan. He also stated that Pakistan should set up a review to find out if renewing ties with India was even necessary.
Gautam Gambhir, India’s opener, though believes no cricketer, India or Pakistan, would stoop to match fixing because they owe everything to the game. Noble indeed!
While reports have conflicted with the ICC stating that the Australian umpire Simon Taufel did not apologise to Pakistan for making an error in his umpiring decision that removed Umar Akmal batting on fifty-five in the crucial semi final against New Zealand, Pakistan are blaming India for also “influencing” the umpires to conspire against Pakistan.
Sometimes it is hard to tell how the yarn was spun!
