Indian Cricketer: Player or Celeb?
Bharat | Nov 21 2006

Indian Public and the Indian cricket selectors are indecisive over who’s mightier - the Game or the Players. The media here plays a major role in influencing the decision to go in favor of the latter, media is more concerned about the off field activities rather than highlighting the player’s talent and flaws.

Cricket is religion in India and the Players living deities, then why do the fanatics feel crestfallen on every Indian defeat? Who’s responsible - if I were to judge I would hold the public responsible for its own dejected state.

Many out there would disagree - the reason being their intense passion, mind-it not for the game but for the performers. It’s high time that the Indian enthusiasts realize that these name have to be left only to the sport, I do agree they deserve the accolades for representing the country but that’s it - making them a house hold name is mere idiotism.

There have been repeated hierarchical changes in the selection committee but one thing unchanged is repeated criticisms it faces for its poor judgment and biased selections, but have we realized what causes these selections - the Celeb status of the players. What makes the Ausies the best team in the world, differentiating them from the others - for India its strength is a bunch of players whom it just doesn’t want to part with whereas for the World champions the team strength is that they don’t rely on one two players, they play as a collective unit with every individual knowing his task irrespective of the big names.

The Indian Cricket Board is the richest sporting organization in the world, and in a country where other games lack basic amenities (even the National game), the cricketers are amongst the highest paid sportspersons in the world and to top it the sentimental value that is attached to a few players is the imp root that has marred the sport in the country.

I think they are not at all cricketers any more all they need is a good ADVERTISING PACKAGE that is why they join cricket. More over Mr.Chappel has not yet stopped his advertisements so by his grace we know that we cannot even get any near to the world cup forget it getting in our pockets...

Mr.Jolly do you really think that Greg Chappell has anything to do with the advertising packages of Indian Cricketers?

Grow up man n stop making Chappell a scapegoat for the personal interests of Indian Cricketers

ya naresh if you remember Greg Chappel asked the Indian cricketers to go for a shoot in a camp that was held in Bangalore... and most of our big guns had participated in that... What was that cricket coaching classes on a ramp...!

i agree wit naresh coz with passage of time the performance of all key player goes on declining...!

i think coz they get ttoo much mny from ads dat tjhat it spoils their mind set n instd of focusing on gameplay they r more concrned abt their looks.... Dhoni.. big exampleeeee..

few days agio i hrd abt Ganguli dat he is workin really vry hard to get back in team!! n i tell u he wz doing all his net prtcice at a public place where he knew dat the mediaperson will certnly com there n intrview him ... n samn thing occured all locals n mdia prsons covrd him n asked few qustions .....

1 thing dat spoils my stomach is, y he wz doing net pratice in such apublic place even he knew dat there can b som inreruption amid his prctice session????

Come on Jolly!!!!!!!!

Do you want to say that our, so called, big cricketing guns are mere minnows or kids that anybody can scatter them apart. What can Chappell do when nobody is interested in the practice sessions rather looking for their shoot outs????????????

Don’t you think it is the moral responsibility of our cricketers to concentrate on their game or practice sessions, while playing for national team???????????????

Ya, I agree with all your comments that the Indian players are resorting to Advertisements - but that is not as grave an issue, nearly every cricketer or every sports person for that matter endorses a product today... What mainly needs to be addressed here is the sentimental value that is attached to a few players.... WHY ARE THESE PLAYERS SO HYPED BY THE PUBLIC AND THE MEDIA IN INDIA?
