IPL 2 Game 12: Charging to Down the Mumbai Indians
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Apr 27 2009

This was going to be a good match. Assuredly the Hyderabad Deccan Chargers have been on the rise while the Mumbai Indians have been trying to find their feet. Two teams who failed to shine through have added the spark to this, the IPL 2, and it was a match that lived up to its billing as Chargers won the humdinger by twelve runs in the end.
The Deccan Chargers built their innings around three key players – the three players at the top of their order. Herschelle Gibbs, captain Adam Gilchrist and change for the match Devon Smith brought the Hyderabad team to 168 runs. First it was the exploding partnership at the top of the order and their sixty-three run dalliance added spark to a team that has been on the rise and putting the debacle of IPL season one behind them.
Herschelle Gibbs stood out for his fifty-eight while Gilchrist played second fiddle of sorts on thirty-five. When the captain departed, the team decided to go with Devon Smith brought into the match and the move paid off handsomely. Smith made thirty-five off twenty-four balls and ensured that the Deccan Chargers maintained their momentum though their loss of wickets towards the end meant that there could have been a lot more the Mumbai Indians would have been chasing. Credit then must go to Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo for picking up three wickets apiece and halting the charge.
Mumbai Indians got off to a bad start with Sanath Jayasuriya falling to RP Singh. But once again Sachin Tendulkar was leading the way with new recruit South African young blood JP Duminy. But their eighty-two run partnership ended with Tendulkar departing for thirty-six and Duminy three short of a half century. And it was Pragyan Ojha who changed the game.
In addition to the two wickets, Ojha also picked up the wicket of Delhi import Shikar Dhawan to virtually nail down the Mumbai Indians. Bravo tried, Abhishek Nayyar tried to repeat his performance and Harbhajan Singh tried to use the long handle. But the target kept inching away from the Mumbai team, and ultimately the twelve run loss, albeit a big margin in this form of the game, was something Mumbai were left to rue as the Chargers continued their winning streak.
