IPL 2 Game 40: Royals No Match for Chargers
Sreelata Yellamrazu | May 13 2009

In a match between two contenders, the Rajasthan Royals proved that this IPL 2 season they have been more of the pretenders.

The Hyderabad Deccan Chargers deployed Chaminda Vaas and Andrew Symonds in charge of getting them a win against the defending champions from the first IPL season. And they were not let down by either man.

After T. Suman’s early run making for thirty, the Deccan Chargers were given a real fillip first by Andrew Symonds and then by Dwayne Smith who has been one of the chief architects behind some of the Chargers’ victories this year. While Symonds knocked thirty precious runs from just nineteen balls, Smith was the accelerator of the innings with his match winning innings of forty-seven off thirty-two balls that included four maximum shots.

Despite the fact that the spin tactic worked for Rajasthan in that Ravindra Jadeja picked two for twenty-six while Yusuf Pathan plucked three wickets for thirty-four , Smith’s innings suddenly meant that the Rajasthan Royals were forced to chase a total that was at least twenty runs more than what they would have liked.

As has been Rajasthan Royals’ bane in this IPL season in South Africa, their batting once again proved their downfall. Apart from Swapnil Asnodkar, no one else showed the gumption to even battle it out. Chaminda Vaas provided the early breakthroughs with the wickets of Graeme Smith and Lee Carseldine but Yusuf Pathan did not come to the show with the bat and it was then a matter of time of when the Royals would fold as Rohit Sharma once again proved valuable with his off spin, picking up three wickets including that of captain Shane Warne.

The Deccan Chargers made their match against the Rajasthan Royals memorable at the De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberley, winning the match by fifty-three runs as Royals folded their innings with three balls to spare, managing to make only 119 runs.
