IPL Battles Television and Parliament Struggles

Sony has won part of the battle, but can IPL win the war?
The IPL 2 seems to be the perfect recipe for controversy. Running into one trouble after another, the latest to hit the IPL is the injunction by the High Court than bans the IPL organizers from interacting with other broadcast channels over the IPL. Sony believe they were forced to take matters to this level as in their opinion, the IPL has by passed them by talking directly to the WSG, World Sports Group, who originally own the IPL broadcast rights worldwide but have leased it to Sony on a five period for an undisclosed sum.
There have been other battles in the past, especially those deals involving Reliance’s BIG TV which were scrapped when word leaked out that Airtel was also in talks over DTH ads. So, the IPL is in a sticky situation. But bigger trouble looms.
No amount of scratching and erasing is helping the IPL organizers meet with approval with the Home Ministry over the dates for the second edition of the IPL. the constant wrangling has seen Lalit Modi announce the new logo of the IPL2 with gusto only to whimper it down to a softer note after the dates needed to be revised again.
With neither the Centre nor the state governments willing to back the tournament with the requisite security shield, this has proved to much a bigger headache than anticipated. As Sony flashes the countdown to the IPL, one has to wonder if the show will happen on time indeed.
