The Deccan Chargers wondered what hit them when Ramesh Powar was bowling. The Kings XI Punjab had pretty much the same feeling for much of their batting innings before pulling off a thriller against the Hyderabad Deccan Chargers who were playing their second match at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in less than twenty-four hours.
The Kings XI Punjab batting floundered at one of its most difficult moments in the game. Needing to win their matches in order to statistically give themselves a chance to make it to the semi finals of the IPL 2, the Kings XI Punjab were set back by early wickets, two of them in the same over bowled by Powar.
When Yuvraj departed, the Mohali team’s read four for sixty-two off ten overs. But Kumar Sangakkara stood resolute in the midst of mayhem and ensured that the Mohali team would at least have something on board that would be near respectable. But it still left the exuberant Deccan Chargers with just 135 to chase.
The Chargers began well with Adam Gilchrist in apparent good form. But as it often happens with small targets, suddenly the Hyderabad lost quick wickets. Suddenly Herschelle Gibbs’ twenty-six became the highest run score of the Deccan Chargers innings as Deccan lost five wickets for seventy-nine in the fourteenth over, Yuvraj Singh leading from the front, taking the prize wickets of Gibbs and Andrew Symonds who was also looking good.
Requiring eleven from six balls, the Deccan Chargers lost Rohit Sharma for forty-two and also R.P. Singh to Irfan Pathan’s tight bowling as Kings XI Punjab raced to victory by one run.
