It appears like a classic case of Geoff Boycott saying, “I told you so.”Andrew Flintoff is returning home from the tour of the West Indies for an injured hip. However, he continues to assure his IPL franchisee owners of his presence though he cannot make assurances for the one day internationals (ODIs) between England and the West Indies!
Andrew Flintoff sustained a hip injury which has prevented him from playing the fourth Test against the West Indies in Barbados. Ravi Bopara is capitalizing on the opportunity instead. Even before the series, Flintoff was in serious doubt over the extent of injuries and his comeback would have always been critical.
Boycott was critical of Flintoff’s chances stating that England had won more without him than with him and that his injuries had only skewed those numbers further. Boycott was also confident that Flintoff will not tow the line of the ECB but rather go all out to ensure that the men who paid him the most would avail of his presence in any manner possible. According to Boycott, Flintoff could well retire earlier than expected from Test cricket and make himself available for such short stint endeavours that would suit him better given his injuries.
Now it has been confirmed that Flintoff will fly back home in light of his injury with the express hope that he will recover in time for the ODI’s to begin therafter.
The ECB is perceptibly concerned about their leading all rounder’s condition and have even sent across a cautionary word that they could well restrict Flintoff from participating from the second season of the IPL with a view to ensuring his fitness for the forthcoming Ashes thereafter.
But Flintoff is going all out to assure his franchisee, the Chennai Super Kings, that he intends to be there for the IPL to lend his support for the cause of Chennai when the IPL commences in April. Having pocked US$1.55 million, Flintoff will certainly not want to disappoint his generous benefactors but also, not sacrifice his England cap in the process.
