Even as England found themselves surrounded by injured players, South Africa suffered a blow with Jacques Kallis being ruled out with a rib fracture.
With the first ODI washed out in Johannesburg, England were hoping the additional two days would help them prepare better for the second ODI on Sunday. However, South Africa have one casualty too in that Kallis has been ruled out of the rest of the ODI series and it remains to be seen whether he will be fit enough to take his place in the Test series following the ODI series.
Kallis suffered pain during the Champions League Twenty20 in India and the persistence of it prompted a scan that revealed the worst. Kallis will now sit on the sidelines when the all rounder was expected to open the batting with South African captain, Graeme Smith.
Now it appears Hashim Amla be take the spot, unless Cricket South Africa feel the impulse to thrust Loots Bosman in after his performances against England in the two Twenty20 internationals.
