Michael Atherton is not the only man with a critical view of things. However, Kapil Dev’s words contain more advice than criticism.
The former Indian captain and all rounder, under whom India brought home the 1983 World Cup, paid tribute to Sachin Tendulkar by focussing on the latter’s flaws, with his ambition for the Little Master.
Kapil wrote in one of the Indian newspapers that while he applauds Tendulkar for his achievement, having completed twenty years in cricket, he feels that Tendulkar has underachieved because he has not sustained his aura of being a “destroyer”. Comparing him with the modern greats such as Viv Richards and Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil stated that Tendulkar’s talent was too enormous to be closeted merely amongst records, citing Geoffrey Boycott who he felt was left only for the record books.
Kapil also expressed his point of view that in his opinion, Tendulkar should have been an out and out destructive batsmen with a colossus of at least “ten double centuries, a 300 and at least a 400″ to his name.
While stating that winning the World Cup was not a feat for one man alone int he team game, he believes that while Tendulkar has remained relatively controversy free, he failed to become one of the world’s ruthless batsmen in the world and that he was disappointed that Tendulkar was only being looked upon as someone who breaks records and whose records must be broken.
He would like to see more innings like his 175 against Australia in the fifth ODI in Hyderabad. Who would not?
