Even as England are hailing one injured hero, they are in a desperate bit to nurse another before the third Test at Edgbaston.
Andrew Flintoff’s injuries have finally caught up with him. He recently announced his retirement at the end of the Ashes 2009. His performances in the second Test at Lord’s gave him the Man of the Match award.
However, it might not just be Flintoff that the England team will be nursing to the end of the Ashes. Kevin Pietersen’s batting in the Ashes has come in for some flak, with Sir Geoffrey Boycott even calling him a “spoilt child”. His batting has shown a desperateness at the crease and his shot selection has been one of a nervous novice than that of a swashbuckling, authoritative batsman.
KP recently admitted that his Achilles Heel problem was far from heeled and that he needed four injections between the first Test at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff and the second Test at Lord’s including one of cortisone and another of a homeopathic nature to get him to bat.
The former England captain lauded Flintoff for his efforts to battle injuries and continue rehabilitation programme despite the frustration involved. KP spoke that he had only been injured for two or three months but that it was physically as well as mentally playing on his mind and restricting his free flowing runs.
The England team would be hoping that the ten day break will give Pietersen enough time to recover sufficiently to be close to his best in the third Test when they press for the advantage.
