The terror attack in Lahore on Sri Lankan players has put all cricket in the sub continent in turmoil. Amidst recommendations from the government that the IPL be postponed, Lalit Modi has reacted strongly, denying that the IPL will be postponed.
Modi and the IPL committee waited long enough before announcing the dates of the detailed schedule. However, with Lok Sabha elections poll dates clashing with some of the matches, his team is now engaged in reworking the schedule to ensure that there is no clash between dates and also, that no matches are healed within 24-48 hours before a particular city goes to poll.
Modi is a mood to not only allay that the apprehensions of the present Indian government but also, of foreign interests as there are voices of concern amongst especially the England cricketers about coming back to India. Already they were caught in a difficult position before when terror came striking on Mumbai’s door.
But Modi is assuring all and sundry that while the remote possibility of a successful terror plot cannot be eliminated, he claims that sufficient measures have been put in place as in the Chennai test between India and England and security arrangements considerably beefed up after the Mumbai episode.
Any further postponement of the IPL would see it clash with the second World Twenty20 championships to be held in the UK and it would put Modi under considerable duress to scrap it eventually should that happen or just as worse, reduce it. While most of the players earlier expressed their hope that the IPL would prove to be valuable practice ahead of the event, yesterday’s horrible events in Pakistan have cast a cloud on all cricket concerns in the region.
