The inaugural Champions League Twenty20 to be staged in India as a spin off to the IPL got cancelled after the Mumbai terror attacks in November last year. But the Champions will still face off, in England this time.
The British Asian Cup will be played on the 6th of July at Lord’s and it will feature last year’s IPL champions, Rajasthan Royals, and last year’s England’s domestic Twenty20 championship winner, Middlesex.
Middlesex were to be the only team to play in the Champions League as Kent had ICL affiliated players such as Justin Kemp and Azhar Mahmood. Middlesex, led by Shaun Udal, will have Tyron Henderson back in their fold for the tie even though the Rajasthan Royals bought him in this year’s auctions for the IPL 2 in South Africa.
The Rajasthan Royals will feature captain Shane Warne, Graeme Smith and perhaps even the Pakistan players such as Kamran Akmal and winner of the purple cap last year Sohail Tanvir for the most number of wickets. However, the Pakistan players are not playing in South Africa in the IPL 2 season over diplomatic issues with India over terrorism related issues.
The British Asian Cup though as been devised as a charity match, one that could become best of three in the year to follow.
