At the outset, it seems ridiculous for commentators to even suggest that Sri Lanka would be contemplating drawing this match after only the first day’s play because to even think about it is as good as having lost the Test.
Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were not the only cricketers to score a century. The first day of the second Test in Kanpur witnessed a turn of events not quite imagined. The Indian openers put up a terrific platform, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are going strong and the Sri Lankan spinners are copping it heavily.
Sri Lanka failed to bring an additional fast bowler to the match and it has perhaps meant that the spinners had to suffer on a pitch that was not taking spin on the first day.
It would explain why Muttiah Muralitharan is stranded on a nice round figure of 100 runs conceded despite taking the wickets of the openers, Rangana Herath is nine runs away and Ajantha Mendis is just thirteen runs shy of a dubious century each.
