Muralitharan still has an outside chance of playing at World Twenty20

Good news for Srilanka, there is a good chance that ace off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan can play for them in the inaugural world Twenty20 later this month. It is worth mentioning in this regard that Muralitharan strained the bicep above his right elbow during a county match. Earlier, it was feared that injury will rule him out of the premier cricketing event but now the final decision will be taken after a scan.

According to Lancashire physio Sam Byrne,

It’s better news than it could have been but it’s up to Sri Lanka to assess it. We got the results back and basically it is just showing some inflammation around the bicep. We’re sending the scans back with Murali to Sri Lanka and they’ll manage it and constantly reassess it over the next week.

In my opinion, presence of Muralitharan is an absolute must for world Twenty20 because most of the top-notch players are not playing in this ICC event and now if Murali also opt out, tournament will lose his charm. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, Jacques Kallis and Mohd Yousuf are not going to play in this tournament.

Sri Lanka plays their first match against Kenya in Johannesburg on 14 September.
