Need to win 2-0 to Stay No.1, India Spring Surprises in Selection for Series against SA
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jan 29 2010

The all importance Test clash between India and South Africa will see India without some of their regular faces, paving the way for a few, fresh ones.
The Indian team for the home series against South Africa has been announced. But the no.1 Test team will be without a few key players. Rahul Dravid tops the list for his broken jaw. Yuvraj Singh has also been ruled out with the ligament injury to his hand and Sreesanth will have his promising comeback shelved with a hamstring injury as well.
Instead the likes of fast medium bowler, Abhimanyu Mithun, and wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha get a look in. Subramaniam Badrinath is back in contention with a middle order option.
While the door is not closed on including any of the injured players, only a fitness test before the second Test will determine the line up, stated chairman of selectors, Krishnamachari Srikkanth.
The rankings hinge heavily on India beating South Africa 2-0 to retain the top rung in the ICC Test rankings. If the series is lost by India, 1-0, South Africa and India will stand together on 123 points.

India’s team for the Tests against South Africa:
Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, Vangipurappu Laxman, Subramaniam Badrinath, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Sudeep Tyagi, Pragyan Ojha, Abhimanyu Mithun, Wriddhiman Saha
