New Zealand managed to escape the clutches of Mohammad Asif. But have they escaped sufficiently into a comfort zone?
Mohammad Asif made an impressive comeback on the first day of the first Test of Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand. But New Zealand did produce two valuable innings to leave an interesting trail in Dunedin at the University Oval.
Asif and Mohammed Aamer showed Pakistan’s prowess with the ball but New Zealand matched that with two of its smartest batsmen as well. Aamer struck to remove Tim McIntosh for naught but Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor kept the fire burning with a 113 run partnership for the third wicket after Daniel Flynn was claimed by Asif.
Guptill’s sixty was stroke filled while Taylor’s innings of ninety-four was all about seizing control before Saeed Ajmal put an end to that. New Zealand captain, Daniel Vettori, and Brendon McCullum were holding fort at the end of the day when Asif returned with figures of three for seventy-six and while Aamer picked two wickets as New Zealand ended the day on 276 for six.
