NZ Pak T1 Day 2 Stumps: Vettori's 99 Bolsters New Zealand's Cause on Rain Afflicted Day
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Nov 25 2009

From a difficult position that could go either way, Daniel Vettori secured his team chances better even as rain played a huge role to leave an intriguing match in the making.
New Zealand recovered from the early assault from Mohammad Asif and the combined effort of Mohammed Aamer and Saeed Ajmal on day one, courtesy a ninety-four run innings by Ross Taylor. But the game was still hanging in the balance at stumps on day one in Dunedin and New Zealand needed another strong stand to bolster their position.
It came in the form of a solid innings from the New Zealand skipper and Brendon McCullum. The 164 run partnership for the seventh wicket allowed New Zealand to strengthen their stand even as rain affected play to a large extent on day two of the first Test.
Little play was possible between lunch and tea as New Zealand moved from 375 for seven to 381 for seven. But through it all, Vettori played a steadying hand as did McCullum. However, Umar Gul put paid to the partnership and New Zealand’s progress, picking up McCullum first for seventy-eight and then, destroying Vettori’s chances for a worthy century against his name, dismissing him for ninety-nine on a day when the hosts managed to make 404 for eight before bad light ended the play for the day.
