NZ Pak T1 Day 3 Stumps: Bond Brings NZ to the Forefront; Akmal Brothers Shine
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Nov 26 2009

Shane Bond ran through the famed Pakistan line up. But failed to stop the Akmal brothers from shining on a day when Pakistan have been rendered on the back foot on the third day of the first Test in Dunedin.
Bond picked up four wickets in his first Test since breaking away from the Indian Cricket League (ICL). And in that, Pakistan were undone in that after bowling out New Zealand for 429, they ended the third day’s play with the scoreboard reading 307 for eight.
Bond was aided by the likes of Chris Martin who dismissed both the openers, Imran Farhat and Khurran Manzoor after which Bond literally decimated the middle order.
But Pakistan had one partnership going for them at five down for eighty-five and it was the 176 run partnership for the sixth wicket between Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal that got Pakistan to a level at which they are in a better position to compete than they would have been otherwise.
While Kamran’s exploits are well known, his brother, Umar’s talent was visible earlier and given the chance to shine at a time when Pakistan most needed it. The duo, unfazed by the difficult situation the visitors were put in, set back repairing the damage on the day that could have sunk Pakistan cricket further.
It took Daniel Vettori and Shane Bond to join forces again to stop the brothers from tearing in New Zealand’s lead. Now it gives Pakistan something to fight for though the task is still enormous.
