NZ Pak T2 Days 1 & 2: Pakistan's Batting - Shocking, NZ's Batting - Even More Shocking!
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Dec 4 2009

First, it was the manner in which the Pakistan batsmen fell that gave the hosts the initiative. But the riposte with the bat has left a lot to be desired, even though the New Zealand captain has not lost faith.
The second Test in Wellington between New Zealand and Pakistan developed a decidedly different twist by stumps on the second Test. If Pakistan do end up winning this Test, which they are in a strong position to do, it will be as much due to their efforts as also the lack of effort from the hosts in the batting department.
Pakistan found themselves at 161 for six at the end of the first day. But the prospects became significantly brighter at the end of the second day’s play as New Zealand were decimated for just ninety-nine runs in thirty-seven runs to give Pakistan the clear edge in the match with three days still to go.
New Zealand won the first Test in sensational fashion by thirty-two runs but as things stand currently, Pakistan are well on their way to squaring the series.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori believes that New Zealand are not out of the game yet and they can chase down any total to the extent of 400. But it will not be easy because New Zealand failed to fight fire with fire, with Mohammad Asif once again leading the way with four wickets.
New Zealand lost six wickets for just twenty-two runs in the session after tea and lasted just about ten overs before conceding a lead of 165, with Danesh Kaneria picking up three wickets as well. Only three New Zealand batsmen made it to double digits with Ross Taylor top scoring with thirty runs.
It was a disappointing effort after New Zealand restricted to Pakistan to 264, despite the Akmal brothers once again getting into rescue mode, with Umar Akmal making forty-six runs while Kamran Akmal made seventy-one runs. Daryll Tuffey and Vettori picked up four wickets apiece even as Shane Bond’s absence meant that Iain O’Brien was pressed into greater responsibility as well.
With Pakistan leading by 229 runs with eight wickets still in hand, New Zealand not only need another stellar bowling effort but also, need their batting to show some spine.
