First, it was only Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik who were denied the opportunity to participate in a domestic event. Now it appears team India’s Test squad may be hit after New Zealand refused to bench their ICL affiliated players.
The BCCI is facing a comeuppance of sorts. Having resisted the ICL for so long, it now finds itself in a tricky situation where the Indian players are being denied crucial practice through their own hard nosed stance.
Test players such as Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman are now likely to miss out on practice matches because the BCCI has refused to play their players in matches that involve New Zealand players who have been involved in the ICL.
New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association chief Heath Mills spoke of Justin Vaughan, the New Zealand Cricket chief executive, approaching him on whether he would bench Hamish Marshall to which he politely responded, “Absolutely not.”
Continuing that stand, Mills stated that players such as Shane Bond, Chris Harris and Daryll Tuffey were New Zealand players and stated categorically, “There’s no way we’d stand for that. They’re New Zealanders and they’re perfectly entitled to play in a domestic league in their own country. We will not accept players being stood down because of the petty politics of another country.”
It appears the BCCI can buy out players with their clout for money, but not principles!
