The IPL 2 edition is likely to feature lesser Australian cricketers, compared to the dominance of the players from down under. But it also means that the Australian players will have to forgo big amount signings as they gear up for Australia’s international assignments.
Brett Lee is coming out of injury while Andrew Symonds is making a comeback on the back of a knee surgery and behavioural problems that saw him miss Australia’s tour to South Africa. While Lee plays for the Mohali Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, Symonds was expected to be available for the entire IPL 2.
Now both players have been named in the fourteen man squad for Australia’s visit to the UAE to play against Pakistan in an ODI series and if fit, will even feature in the final eleven. It then rules them out of the IPL 2, at least the early part of the second edition of the Twenty20 tournament which has moved from India to South Africa this year.
Translating this into money, Brett Lee is expected to lose around 82,000 dollars for every game he misses for the Mohali team while Andrew Symonds will make about 842 dollars if he joins his Hyderabad Deccan Chargers team at the end of the ODI series in the UAE. With expected losses in the millions, the Australian cricketers are losing a significant financial impetus, furthering strengthening the case for the need of an IPL window in the international cricket calendar as devised by the ICC.
