New Zealand winning the ODI series in Abu Dhabi was quickly watered away by an under par performance from them against Pakistan in Dubai.
The first T20I between New Zealand and Pakistan in Dubai saw a rather one sided affair with Pakistan scoring 160 and then, successfully defending it to win by forty-nine runs.
Brendon McCullum took over the reins of New Zealand captain after Daniel Vettori was rested in view of a head injury suffered during the ODI series. Kyle Mills was also missing in action with a shoulder injury. James Franklin was thrust in despite being less than fit because Jacob Oram went back home to be by his pregnant wife while Aaron Redmond pulled up with a groin injury.
Imran Nazir survived a testing time against Shane Bond with the ball before managed to cut loose for an innings of fifty-eight runs from thirty-eight balls that eventually made the difference between the two sides despite young Tim Southee picking up three wickets.
But New Zealand did not have much going for them apart from Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill who briefly gave hope before fading into misery. For Shahid Afridi, it would be a pleasant sight given that Pakistan did have a two day of mayhem with Younis Khan being replaced by Mohammad Yousuf for the Test series.
How New Zealand can turn the match around will remain the key question for the second T20I tonight.
