Pakistan's Match Fixing Allegations: Why This Sounds Wrong?
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Oct 6 2009

Leave aside the notion of whether this is the world maligning Pakistan or Pakistan maligning Pakistan (the allegations emanated largely from Pakistan circles). It seems incredulous that Pakistan would do this, if assumed they did it indeed. Here’s why.

Pakistan would not have dropped the match against New Zealand because
It is the ICC Champions Trophy semi final, duh?
Who would want to lose the semi final and not get into the final, especially if there was the possibility of a double with the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England?

Younis Khan, the Pakistan captain, could not have dropped the catch off Grant Elliot deliberately because
Refer to the above answer, but also because Shahid Afridi is breathing down his neck and Younis Khan has always wanted to lead a successful Pakistan team and every one knows, catches win matches!

Umar Gul could not be involved in ball tampering in South Africa because
Although Gul was cleared of the malpractice alleged by New Zealand in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, it is even more less likely that he or anyone of the Pakistan team would be picking the seam on the occasion against Australia in the final league match because if Jamshed Ahmed Dasti’s allegation (he is the Chairman of the Sports Committee of the Pakistan National Assembly...phew!) that Pakistan wanted Australia to win the match to keep India out of the tournament, where was the need to pick the seam? Australia had to win, right?

Pakistan would not throw away the tournament because
Pakistan has become the less favoured tourist destination for cricket teams and the only way Pakistan could show the world that there is a need to respect cricket in Pakistan despite the turmoil is by showing that they have not lost their competitiveness by any manner or means or their confidence dented by lack of teams agreeing to tour Pakistan.
What could be a stronger statement than winning the tournament?

Pakistan could not have conspired against India because
Leave aside Indo Pak diplomatic relations or even of Pakistan seeking a revenge of sorts for India cancelling their tour to Pakistan earlier this year over the terror attacks of 26/11 on Mumbai last year.
Simple cricket logic would have stated that Pakistan would have benefitted allowing the weaker team (no disrespect to India) to get through, Pakistan would have stood a greater chance of beating India had they made it to the final rather than having to face Australia, which New Zealand denied them, of course.
A strong, in form Pakistan team against a clueless Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, with an injured cast team of performers. Now would that not have told the story?

(Disclaimer: If money was the sole criteria, then all the cricket logic simply goes out of the window)
