Nursing a torn calf muscle, England’s maverick batsman Kevin Pietersen is likely to miss the first Test against the West Indies starting on May 17 at the Lord’s.
KP, as Pietersen is known, had suffered the injury on Monday, during Hampshire’s match against Ireland and was forced out of the Championship match against Lancashire.
Pietersen admitted he is no more a certainty for the first Test and said
It is extremely annoying. The muscle is torn and I’ll have to see how it responds to treatment before I know if I’ll be able to play.
Incidentally, England is also likely to miss their regular captain Michael Vaughan who broke the middle finger of his right hand while playing for Yorkshire
If he does not recover in time for the Test, England would definitely miss KP, who was one of its rare players who returned from the World Cup with his reputation intact. He was also England’s highest scorer in the Ashes series against Australia.
England will announce their squad for the Test on Sunday. The Middlesex twin of Owais Shah and Ed Joyce are likely to be named as replacements for the injured duo.
