Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, may not be known to be generous towards his opposition on the field. But he has a heart for those suffering from childhood cancer for whom he will let his bat talk.
Ponting is another Australian after the likes of Steve Waugh and Glen McGrath to associate his name with a worthy cause. Steve Waugh has become a familiar figure in India, especially in Kolkata, for the welfare work he has undertaken for girls through his project, Udayan. McGrath, who lost his wife, Jane McGrath, to breast cancer is now spending time from retirement raising awareness and funds for the cause.
Ponting, as part of the Ponting foundation which his wife Rianna Ponting also actively participates, begin a programme called “Run, Ricky, Run” which is expected to raise funds for children suffering from cancer.
According to Ponting, not only will the runs he scores be sponsored but also, that the public at larger, kids especially, will have an added incentive to follow the fortunes of the Australian team no matter where they travel.
Even with the fiercely fought Ashes on his mind, Ponting has left his heart to nobler thoughts and deeds.
