Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, would not have liked the fact that India got as close as four runs in the first ODI of the series. But he will have a harder time still given that Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson have joined James Hopes on the rest bed.
The national selection panel chairman, Andrew Hilditch, released a statement to the effect that Hopes’ hamstring injury is indeed more serious and it may end up in him missing more than a game.
He also stated that the previously reported injuries to Brett Lee’s elbow and Mitchell Johnson’s ankle will meant that both the fast bowlers will be missing in action in the second ODI at Nagpur of the seven match ODI series.
Ponting and Australian coach, Tim Nielsen, had griped against the proximity of tournaments, especially with the Champions League Twenty20 and that they have had to contend with some many injured players - the previous list includes Michael Clarke, Callum Ferguson, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin.
Cricket Australia have called up Moises Henriques who featured for the New South Wales Blues (NSW) squad to join the squad as a possible replacement should Hopes not recover.
