Ponting’s Rest, Symonds’ Inclusion Annoy Waugh

Steve Waugh has spoken out at the ailing affairs of the Australian dressing room and wondered whether it was right in pursuing players whose heart may not be in the right place.
Waugh expressed doubts over Ricky Ponting being rested for the next two matches of the Chappell Hadlee Trophy after New Zealand won a close affair. From the former skipper’s perspective, the captain could perhaps make the best call on whether he was filling up to the task and that resting players in this day and age when they are more than happily signing on for extra curricular, money making extravaganzas such as the IPL could be easily debatable.
Ponting’s absence would certainly leave a gaping hole in an already struggling batting line up and though his rest would have come after hard grinds against India in India and against South Africa at home with a view to touring South Africa later this month, Australian tactics have not gone down well with the former Australian skipper.
Waugh is also uncertain that Andrew Symonds can continue to give Australia that edge that makes them stand out from the rest. Given his injury in addition to his growing disciplinary resume, Waugh wonders whether it would simply be better to blood a new youngster, someone in the likes of Phillip Hughes who only at twenty is making huge waves on the domestic circuit.
