That is perhaps a little harsh. But it is true to an extent. After all, only two sessions from the two Tests come to mind when describing South Africa’s fight. It is no surprise then that Australia have scored another huge victory, this one by 175 runs, to seal the series victory and retain their number one tag.
Hopes of a draw, despite the fact that South Africa captain Graeme Smith would not bat at all in all likelihood were raised when Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers forged a partnership that took South Africa to safety losing just two wickets at the end of the fourth day’s play.
Neil McKenzie and Hashim Amla played their part. But it was the duo that batted for more than three hours, almost as if JP Duminy’s thoughts of Gary Kirsten batting through against England to save a Test were coming into reality.
But then South Africa woke up and the dream simply vanished. With both dismissed, the gates opened up again. Their ninety-three and eighty-four did not matter. The Australian fast bowlers did their job and allowed Simon Katich to run riot with the rest of the line up. And there was just too much time to bat out for Smith to repeat his Sydney heroics.
370 in the fourth innings of a Test would have been great. But it was not good enough for the hosts. South Africa’s dreams were shipwrecked but Ricky Ponting’s smile would suggest that Australia had found their sails again!
