A smarting South Africa smacked back! Stung by criticism and falling flat on their face at home, South Africa got the better of the tourists in the third ODI in Newlands, Cape Town.
Ab de Villiers exploded upon the unsuspecting England team after the South African captain, Graeme Smith, and Hashim Amla set the platform nicely with a 107 run opening stand.
Ab’s belligerence became apparent in his eighty-five ball 121 as South Africa amassed a daunting 354 for six in their fifty overs. Alviro Petersen was not to left behind as the duo put up a ninety-four run stand for the fourth wicket after Amla and Ab were parted after another ninety-five run stand for the second wicket.
England team were on a high after the second ODI win but all that confidence withered away in the face of a couple of interesting changes by the South Africans and outstanding batting by Ab in particular.
Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann returned to replace Sajid Mahmood and Adil Rashid respectively and while the former returned with four wickets, it came at a hefty cost of seventy-one runs conceded in his ten overs.
In reply, England found themselves reduced to five down for 150 in the twenty-seventh over, having lost the dangerous Eoin Morgan for naught ( a brilliant caught and bowled by JP Duminy). Kevin Pietersen returned to the pavilion two overs before him, another Duminy dismissal, but until then KP was holding fort with forty-eight runs. Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell, who replaced Albie Morkel (brother of Morne) and Charl Langeveldt, showed the hunger of youth, bowling with spark and enthusiasm, wrecking the chase by picking up the top three between them.
Last spotted, England were 195 for five after thirty-overs with Paul Collingwood doing his best on sixty-eight runs. But England need a bliztkrieg from here to do the trick on the night.
