The post tea session saw England take on South Africa’s first innings total. And it appeared Jonathan Trott and the England captain, Andrew Strauss, had done a good job to get through the day without no major loss.
Alastair Cook was the only wicket to fall in the England innings that began after tea chasing South Africa’s first innings total of 418 on the second day of the first Test at Centurion.
Jacques Kallis could not build much into the innings of a century, eventually departing for 120 courtesy James Anderson. The South African innings lost a crucial century run partnership break after the fall of Kallis at five for 283 and JP Duminy, having made a useful half century himself, departed not soon after.
Thereafter partnerships assumed a cameo nature as Mark Boucher added valuable forty-nine even as Graeme Swann added to his two wickest from yesterday to finish with a five wicket haul as Graham Onions had three wickets for his first Test in South Africa. Paul Harris had a thirty-eight to his name. But South Africa suffered a heart stopping moment when Morne Morkel suffered a hit to his jaw. Fortunately the magic spray did the trick as the lanky fast bowler was back on his foot but could not exted his stay at the crease.
It meant that South Africa shored up 418 and England needed to start well. Cook suffered one dropped catch from an uncharacteristic Ab de Villiers but eventually perished for fifteen, giving debutant Friedel de Wet, drafted in after Dale Steyn failed a fitness test yesterday morning, his first international wicket.
But from 25 for one, Strauss and Trott guided England through the extended final session with no further loss, adding eighty-eight runs, with Strauss unbeaten on forty-four and Trott on eighteen.
