Sarwan steps into Lara's shoes

As expected, West Indies appointed middle order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan as its new captain following Brian Lara’s retirement after the World Cup.

The three-member selection panel of Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts were unanimous in their choice for the 26-year-old Guyanese right-hander.

Trinidad and Tobago captain Darren Ganga was the other leading candidate for the captain’s post.

Incidentally, former West Indies captain Viv Richards had supported Sarwan for the job and said after serving as Lara’s deputy, it was only right that the youngster was elevated to the captain’s job.

Sarwan is currently holidaying in Miami and is expected to return soon before the selectors pick the squad for the England tour this month.

West Indies could not reach the semifinals of the just-concluded World Cup, which prompted Lara and coach Bennett King to quit their jobs.

The West Indies Cricket Board is also expected to name a new coach soon.
