Sehwag: A Statistical Nightmare - For Brabourne with Love
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Dec 3 2009

With Virender Sehwag, there is always the danger when he is on song, of destroying statistical records by the dozen. On a day that kept the number chasers on their feet, these were added to that list.

Sehwag surpassed Rahul Dravid for the most number of double hundreds - six to five after his double at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on the second day of the third Test against Sri Lanka.
Sehwag broke his own record of scoring 200 runs in 168 balls, and is second behind New Zealand’s Nathan Astle who scored his double century in 153 balls at Christchurch in 2001-’02 against England.

Sehwag’s double century meant that he is the only Indian batsman to score a double century in a single day’s play on three occasions.
Sehwag is only one behind the late Sri Don Bradman’s record of five innings over 250 runs.
Sehwag scored 284 runs in a single day’s play, becoming the third highest by any batsman in a day’s play, after 309 by Sir Don Bradman for Australia against England at Leeds in 1930 and 295 by Wally Hammond for England against New Zealand at Auckland in 1932-33.

Sehwag’s innings is the highest by any batsman at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. The other two batsmen to score double hundreds are - Vinoo Mankad who made 223 against New Zealand in 1955-56 and Dilip Sardesai who was on unbeaten 200 against New Zealand in 1964-65.
Sehwag’s feat of reaching 250 off 207 balls has set a new benchmark in Tests. He bettered his own past record, scoring against South Africa off 225 balls at Chennai in March 2008, where he also made his triple century.
