It is a headache that has become a migraine for the ICC. First, Pakistan became an un-viable venue for the visiting team, leading to the deferring of the Champions Trophy. Now once again the ill fated trophy comes under the scanner as the second venue is already being deemed unfit.
It did not take the Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers for players and boards to voice their concerns about touring Pakistan for a bilateral series, let alone the Champions Trophy. Their collective voice ensured that the Champions Trophy did not take place in Pakistan and the ICC ensured that it happened largely because they refused to see ground reality and did not give themselves time to plan for an alternate venue.
Sri Lanka were in line to host the Champions Trophy if Pakistan could not. But now it appears that while the ICC has taken the Champions Trophy out of Pakistan, they may well do it to Sri Lanka itself. But terrorism or civil war like situation is not Sri Lanka’s disadvantage.
Instead the truant monsoon season is likely to see Sri Lanka lose the Champions Trophy. With rain threatening to mar games, the possibility of seeing truncated matches would not have been ideal. Already Sourav Ganguly’s India has shared the trophy with the Sri Lankans when rain ruined the Champions Trophy in a previous edition. Fearing a similar situation, the ICC will be discussing the matter with its member nations before arriving at a final decision, as close to one that the ICC can make.
