Pakistan will feel they have recklessly given away a brilliant chance to go one up n the hosts when they succumbed late in the day and handed the initiative back to Sri Lanka in the third Test at the SSC in Colombo in what will be Chaminda Vaas’s final Test.
Pakistan let the initiative slip after leading the proceedings at 203 for two. Manzoor and Mohammad Yousuf built a commanding partnership that should have ideally given both men, impressive centuries. With Fawad Alam and Pakistan captain, Younis Khan, back in the pavilion thanks to Thilan Thushara, it was upto Khurram Manzoor and Yousuf to regain control at two down for thirty-six.
Manzoor played well for his ninety-three before he became Vaas’ first victim of the match and Yousuf was out to a needless run out, a run that was taken after the first run out opportunity was missed, batting with Misbah ul Haq. Yousuf departed for ninety and the final session and new ball yielded dividends for Sri Lanka.
Misbah ul Haq and Shoaib Mallik built up a brief partnership with the latter scoring forty-five runs but Pakistan lost five wickets for eighty-four runs, giving Sri Lanka the chance to sleep peacefully as Pakistan found themselves at seven down for 289 at stumps on the first day.
