Smith Holds of Surgery for Clash against Australia
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jan 11 2009

Graeme Smith may have returned home to South Africa after being hailed highly in Australia. But he knows there is still a task ahead of him, which is why he is unwilling to get his tennis elbow treated.
Smith underwent a blood injection procedure in Melbourne, Australia but returned to Sydney to try and save the Test for South Africa in the dead rubber. While the doctors who treated him has stated that perhaps Smith has nullified the effects of the treatment without rest, Smith is putting the brakes on surgery for the moment which would put him out of cricket for anywhere between eight to twelve months.
Clearly Smith is not eager to relinquish the hold he has on the team and disturb the building process towards taking South Africa to the number one spot. A hands on skipper in many ways, Smith is not as power hungry as he is keen to be a part of the process and lead from the front, as has been shown aplenty over 2008 and in the first Test at Sydney in 2009.
With Australia slated to tour South Africa in late February, Smith is perhaps eager for South Africa not only to gain the number one tag but that they could prove just as tough at home.
