South Africa Overcome Australia’s Target for Famous Melbourne Victory
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Dec 30 2008

Yet again it was the decisive play by the captain that ensured South Africa would cruise to victory. After all 183 would have been nothing before 414.
It was as clinical as it was straight. And it was complete. With less than thirty runs to get in the post lunch session (twenty-six to be more precise), South Africa went about their job chasing down Australia’s modest target of 183 with resolution and purpose.
In contrast, Australia appeared as they have for parts during this season – baffled and clueless. There was clearly one team that wanted to team; the other, simply going through the grind. While rain was expected to come to Australia’s rescue, perhaps their lackadaisical efforts did not compel the rain gods to shower some mercy on the hosts.
Graeme Smith continued in his vein from overnight at the MCG and the 153 South Africa needed to get on the fifth day to seal a famous victory were secured through the partnership with Neil McKenzie and then, with the latter combining with Hashim Amla who hit the winnings runs of Michael Clarke.
Smith’s seventy-five is indicative of the fact that South Africa have looked good for the going and made it easier for the men in the dressing room to breathe. Australia’s efforts did not suggest they were going for wickets by the fact that Mitchell Johnson was overlooked for an injured Brett Lee. McKenzie found some form too, batting his way precociously for an unbeaten fifty-nine.
But it appeared little would change the fortunes for the day as South Africa stuck to their goals and their plans and executed them with aplomb. A 2-0 comprehensive series victory was theirs then for the taking and they would simply not be denied.
