South Africa did not simply win in Melbourne. They made history.
When South Africa were left chasing 183 for a win in Melbourne, the victory held much significance. When they chased it, they were essentially chasing history. In fact, history was so against their side before this tour that it would require a monumental effort to scale the summit and even survive.
But when Hashim Amla hit the winning runs, Graeme Smith could not stop smiling from the balcony. Here is why. By beating Australia at the MCG in Melbourne by nine wickets, South Africa established a comprehensive victory over the hosts after being nearly squashed by the end of the second day’s play. To then come back, fight and actually bring the hosts to their knees and force a win on the final day was no mean feat.
By this victory alone does not make the Melbourne win so special.
This was a build up to the victory at the WACA, Perth when South Africa decided to go for glory chasing 414 and created history there as well. This then made it a 2-0 victory in a three Test series in Australia, their first series victory in Australia since their return to the international arena in 1991-’92.
But it gets better. Graeme Smith becomes the first South Africa captain to lead his team to victory in a Test series in Australia, something that has not been accomplished since Kepler Wessels came back to Australia only to lead South Africa. South Africa now have nine successive Test series win and a draw in India in ten Test series thus far.
But the victory at Melbourne is bigger still because this is the first time in sixteen years that Australia have been beaten at home. The last time that happened was in 1992-’93 when the West Indies beat them. So, Australia have ignominiously written themselves into the history books.
But South Africa’s job is far from done. They must now go to Sydney for the New Year Test and ensure they keep their winning momentum if they are to steal the world’s number one tag from the reigning world champions. It will not be easy but South Africa have shown hunger for a battle and the rewards are beginning to show.
