South African Murmurs About Centurion
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Sep 23 2009

What South Africa would not do to play in Johannesburg with the pitch like the one at the Wanderers that helped make a match of the West Indies Pakistan Group A tie of the ICC Champions Trophy?
The tournament is only into its second day and one has to wonder about the scheduling of the tournament. As things stand, South Africa will consider themselves unlucky (not because they lost to Sri Lanka, some would call it home jinx in big ICC tournaments) because all their three league matches in Group B involve matches played at Centurion.
The Wanderers provided plenty of drama with the seam bowlers from both, Pakistan and West Indies, enjoying the pace and bounce and the action assisted by the pitch.
The pitch at Centurion was two paced and as startling as South African captain Graeme Smith’s decision to field first. The beaming smile on Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara’s face could not hide and neither did his words, that his unorthodox bowlers, especially carrom ball spinner Ajantha Mendis, had a field day.
With New Zealand’s captain Daniel Vettori contemplating using two spinners in the starting line up in their match against South Africa, it is pretty obvious the line of thinking adopted.
South Africa will need to brace themselves. It is not going to get too easy. But perhaps they would like to ‘wander’ off to Johannesburg soon, once they can get through their league matches.
