Sri Lankans have had no official match practice thanks to cyclone Phyan. But is India heading for another thunderstorm?
The Sri Lankan team was scheduled to play the Board President XI at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in a warm up match before the first Test against India on Monday on their tour to India.
However, the threat of cyclone Phyan hitting Mumbai put paid to both cricket matches, the other being the seventh ODI between India and Australia that the latter won by a 4-2 margin. With the second day’s play wiped out due to wet conditions, the Sri Lankans did not apparently want to play a one day type of game ahead of the Test series. Fortunately the indoor facilities have kept the team busy cricket wise.
As it turned out the three day match was called off and with it, a chance for some of the Indian fringe players to prove a point and the opportunity for the Sri Lankans to test themselves in Indian conditions before taking on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men.
But Dhoni’s worries will not have reduced despite the change in squad. Momentum is a big factor and India’s dismal performances against the Australia, albeit in the ODIs, will be hard to shake off.
Perhaps team India needs to simply start with a clean slate, one that has wiped past disappointments to start afresh.
