Just as Mohammad Asif is completing his one year ban after testing positive, news of Dale Steyn also testing positive has come to light. But Steyn is likely to escape punishment.
Pakistan’s Asif was caught in a drug test for dope during the first season of the IPL. His detainment at the Dubai airport further worsened his situation. Now he is looking to come out of the ban with a fresh start as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) intend to send him early to South Africa for assessment before the ICC Champions Trophy.
However, South Africa’s Dale Steyn has also tested positive during the IPL 2 season held in South Africa itself or so informs the Cricket South Africa (CSA) board.
However, Steyn, who plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), was not found with banned substances. And fortunately for him, he had disclosed that he was on painkillers and had taken Myprodol, a substance containing codeine which is then converted into morphine.
What this has meant is that Steyn’s morphine levels were higher than the acceptable 1 mg (1.3mg). But since this is not a case of doping, the CSA have informed the IPL authorities but expect the express fast bowler to get away scot free.
