Thomson Flays Ponting’s Captaincy

Former Australian fast bowler has launched into a scathing criticism of Australia’s captain ahead of the Ashes. And to think that the media is always gunning for the foreign team!
Thomson stated that he had not changed his impression about Ricky Ponting since Ponting took over the captaincy from Steve Waugh in 2004. In his opinion, the only reason Ponting won the nod was because of the fact that there was nobody worthy of taking on the captaincy. Even then he found the reasoning absurd.
Thomson stated that Ponting’s average marks as a captain was covered by the fact that he was leading a team of good players and his frustrations had become obvious once the greats such as Shane Warne and Glen MGrath have left, leaving Ponting to manage a rather “average” team.
Thomson was also critical of Ponting backing Nathan Hauritz because in his opinion Hauritz did not do much as a spinner to merit a place in the squad. While Ponting has countered Thomson’s remarks by stating that he was excited by the prospect of leading a young team, Thomson labeled Ponting as a “crap” captain.
Thomson also stated that he did not think that Brett Lee would get a place in the final playing eleven simply because the latter had not played in so long.
