Cricket’s first brush with the decider in a tied Twenty20 match saw interest awaken in a series that the cricket world is perhaps looking at with an alienated eye. While the bowl out raised questions about how valid it was in the context of the nature of the game, Daniel Vettori raises a valid point, “What’s wrong with a tie?”
The series between New Zealand and the visitors, West Indies, saw two Twenty20 tied matches. It was in the second match that the “Eliminator Over” or “Super Over” was employed in a bid to secure a result.
As for the rules of the system employed for the Stanford tournament originally and yet to be ratified by the ICC, three batsmen are allowed to bat for each side and the dismissal of two would signal the end of their turn, which is playing out one over a side.
West Indies ending up winning the match on the basis of that one over as Chris Gayle lofted Vettori to take twenty-five runs off him. New Zealand, on the other hand, lost both their wickets and ending up on the losing side.
While Chris Gayle was ecstatic about the new rule change and all for it, Vettori countered it as a reaction when a team ends up on the winning side. In his own words, he did not want to see the game diluted to an over to decide the game. It’s not “One1”, he is quoted as saying.
He makes a very valid point when he says, “what’s wrong with a tie?” Indeed wasn’t tie a unique result in the context of the game and can we not leave it at that?
