Warne Reckons England Made a Mistake Leaving Vaughan Out
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jun 28 2009

Shane Warne has hardly been known to keep his mouth shut. Now he gets paid not to. Whether goading the Australian team or unsettling the England team, Warne stated in his column that leaving Michael Vaughan out of the Ashes squad was a mistake.
Warne, captain of the Rajasthan Royals and Australia’s legendary leg spinner, has slammed the ECB for not picking the former England captain in the Ashes squad for England. Warne, who has played against Vaughan, was adamant that Vaughan’s experience alone would have made a difference on the England team that is clearly trying to form a formidable unit. While still frail around the edges, Warne believes that Vaughan, who led England to win over the Australians in the 2005 Ashes only to suffer knee injuries, would have added the additional element of talent, and experience and with his thinking acumen, could have made the difference.
While there is no discounting Warne’s opinion or Vaughan’s talent and experience, Vaughan has not been able to display either quality in the domestic tournaments despite skipping the IPL 2. In that light, perhaps England would not think of tinkering with this line up, with Ravi Bopara in form.
Warne has been rather critical of Bopara despite his recent success against the West Indies , opening the batting. But Warne believes Vaughan would far surpass any batsman in the England team. The only player he excludes from those surpassed, not surprisingly, is his former Hampshire team mate and friend, Kevin Pietersen.
Warne also bats for his former team mate Brett Lee and hoped that Lee would get a chance to play first up and regain his former glory.
