West Indies Players Refuse Test Series Against Bangladesh

The West Indies cricket plunged further and deeper into controversy, this time as players threaten to boycott the home series against Bangladesh altogether.
Dinanath Ramnarine, the president of the WIPA (West Indies Players Association), has communicated to the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) that the players have requested to inform the board, the sponsors, and all associated with the sport that they do not intend to play the series against Bangladesh. The news comes even as the first Test is slated to be played tomorrow at St. Vincent.
The players are unhappy over the fact that they have had to play the last four tournaments without a legitimate contract in place and are unwilling to go any further on similar lines. As professional sportsmen, they are playing without contracts and it has given the players sufficient reason for grievance, the same grievance cropping up as the Chris Gayle led team threatened to abort the fifth one day international against England during West Indies’ tour to England. There were further problems as the captain himself opted to stay to play in the IPL 2 in South Africa as opposed to attend to the Test preparations.
This is not the first time that the West Indies players have been embroiled in controversy ahead of a tour. Their payments were revised before they left their hotel room for the bilateral series in South Africa when Brian Lara was captain. Unless there is a established system in place, players will continue to revolt, legitimately or otherwise in holding cricket ransom.
Meanwhile the Bangladesh Cricket Board is concerned over the developments although they have not been informed officially. While the WICB states that the first Test will go forward as scheduled, it remains to be seen if the leading West Indies players will actually feature. Another furore on the cards.
