If there is one man who desperately needs to turn it around on India’s tour to the West Indies, it has to be Ishant Sharma who is lucky to have earned a berth ahead of Irfan Pathan.
Irfan Pathan must be wondering what he must do to earn a place in the playing eleven. It was obvious there was little reasoning involved in benching Irfan Pathan, especially after the Super Eights match in the ICC World Twenty20 when Pathan bowled four terrific overs conceding just nine runs for one wicket. On the contrary, Ishant has picked just two wickets in the five matches that India played.
While Pathan has been largely economical, Ishant has been too expensive and often perhaps the difference between India winning and losing. Kevin Pietersen relaxed as did Ravi Bopara and so did Bangladesh and the West Indies when Ishant was bowling and it was certainly a pathetic sight with the bowler who created ripples in Australia. If a bowler is going for nine runs an over, clearly something is not right and in Ishant’s case, it becomes only more obvious. Ishant appeared jaded even during the IPL 2 in South Africa for the already hapless looking Kolkata Knight Riders.
Now Ishant will have to prove that his lapse in the Twenty20 tournament was only a lapse and not indication of a bigger malady.
